Robert Sobukwe is one of the four residences in Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu Hall. We are located at the heart of campus, within a stone’s throw distance from the library, from most lecture venues, from student facilities and the Steve Biko Building.
To help you settle into Robert Sobukwe, and life at Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 in general, we have a student leadership team of well-trained individuals who will assist you in every way possible. These individuals also organise and encourage participation in inter-residence sports, community engagement, environmental and social events. As the biggest residence on campus, Robert Sobukwe is rich in diversity, individual uniqueness is celebrated and we cultivate a spirit of togetherness, providing a "home away from home" to 139 students from different countries.
The House Warden, Dr Amos Chinomona, works closely with his team of Sub-Wardens and House Committee Members to create a friendly, nurturing and comfortable living and learning environment that is inclusive and conducive to academic success, through promoting a healthy lifestyle for personal growth.
We place an emphasis on creating a learning environment where our students can excel academically, which includes a mentorship system for all first-year students. We pride ourselves on our sport, as well as opportunities to become involved in local community engagement activities, and during the course of the year we have a number of social events during which students have the opportunity to socialise and have fun in a safe environment.
We look forward to welcoming you to Robert Sobukwe House, where you will meet new people, make new friends, grow, question, discover and ultimately achieve your goal of a degree and even more.
Robert Sobukwe accommodates 139 students with 135 single rooms, and 2 sets of spacious double rooms. We have a dedicated study room as well as a large common room. All meals are provided in our central dining hall, a short walk away, and we also have kitchenettes supplied with communal microwaves, sinks and two fridges. There are bathrooms on each of the three floors, and the Residence has a communal laundry room with washing machines, tumble dryers and an enclosed outside space to hang clothes to dry.
Students in the Residence have WiFi internet access in their rooms and technical support is typically provided by the Student Networking Representative. Printing facilities are available in the Residence, charged on each student’s printing balance, found online on the Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 Student Support System (ROSS), and there is a communal computer in one of the three available common rooms.
The bedrooms are carpeted, spacious and well-equipped with: a single bed and mattress, bedside table, mirror, study table and chair, bookcase, desk lamp, wardrobe, notice board, wall-mounted bar heater, wastepaper basket, shower basin, shower mat and water bucket.
Students are also provided with linen by the housekeeping staff: duvet, duvet cover, bedding sheet, mattress cover, two pillows, two pillowcases, winter blanket, curtains and inner net curtains. Students can bring their own linen, but they are then responsible for the laundering. Maintenance and cleaning of each of the Residences are attended to by Rhodes Housekeeping staff on a daily basis. Students are expected to maintain order and hygiene in their rooms for the duration of their stay.
