Finding the 'STEM Brains': the Siyanqoba mission to disarm the fear of maths
South Africa has a deep, untapped reservoir of young people with a natural talent for logic, patterns, and problem-solving - so-called ‘STEM brains’. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. However, for decades, many of these brilliant minds have been lost – not due to a lack of ability, but to a school system that often teaches mathematics and science in a way that is rigid, uninspiring, and, in many cases, outright intimidating.

Students from schools in Makhanda and nearby communities, including Port Alfred, Bathurst, and Gqeberha, met on 17 February 2023 for the Rhodes Å·ÖÞ±×ãÇòÍø_ÍâΧÂòÇòappÍÆ¼ö-Ͷע|¹ÙÍø Mathematics Experience (RUME) at the Barratt Lecture Theatre Complex at Rhodes Å·ÖÞ±×ãÇòÍø_ÍâΧÂòÇòappÍÆ¼ö-Ͷע|¹ÙÍø.

This year the Rhodes Å·ÖÞ±×ãÇòÍø_ÍâΧÂòÇòappÍÆ¼ö-Ͷע|¹ÙÍø Maths Experience (RUME) welcomed 22 schools and a total of 360 learners from in and around Grahamstown, with schools from Port Alfred and Port Elizabeth joining as well. RUME is an annual event that hosts learners from grade 7-12, both public and private schools.
