Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 is one of the 37 universities in the South Africa–Sweden 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 Forum (SASUF) set to receive a significant boost as part of a R25 million funding injection.
This comes courtesy of the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) and South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF), marking the launch of a new funding phase: SASUF+, running from August 2025 to August 2028.
SASUF promotes deep, strategic collaborations in research and innovation. The new phase builds on existing ties, sharpening the focus on shared global and local challenges through a truly “glocal” approach.
“Among the exciting aspects of this third phase of the programme are: the commitment to collaboration across academia, industry and civil society; an increased focus on intra-African collaboration and enhanced opportunities for student mobility” said Orla Quinlan, Director of Global Engagement, whose division coordinates all Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 staff and student engagement with SASUF.
Opportunities to engage, apply for funding, and participate in upcoming events will open in September 2025
“We are deeply grateful for the generous funding provided through STINT and the NRF, which will substantially enhance our collaborative initiatives and strengthen our strategic partnerships. This vital support affirms our shared commitment to addressing some of the most urgent and complex challenges facing humanity through impactful, high-quality research and innovation,” said Professor Sizwe Mabizela, Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网.
These urgent challenges – climate change, global health crises, socio-economic inequality, and technological upheaval – are, as Prof Mabizela notes, “multifaceted, interconnected, and simultaneously local and global in nature”.
“They cannot be resolved in isolation. Addressing them requires sustained intellectual cooperation, interdisciplinary engagement, and meaningful collaboration across institutions, sectors, and national boundaries,” he said.
SASUF+ will drive research across four thematic areas:
- Sustainable Health
- Green Transition
- Migration and Urbanisation
- Democracy, Social Justice, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems
These themes will anchor new Work Packages (WP) throughout the three-year phase.
STINT’s Strategic Grants are designed to support pioneering projects that advance integrated internationalisation. The NRF, meanwhile, continues its core mission of supporting research, human capacity development, and research infrastructure. The funding decisions were announced on 23 June 2025.
“This grant positions us to make a meaningful contribution to the generation of knowledge, the development of sustainable solutions, and the pursuit of a more just and equitable global future,” Professor Mabizela concluded.
