We’re excited to welcome you into a community of students working to make educational development meaningful, joyful, and accessible for all learners in Makhanda.  Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 Staff and Students can apply to join one of FIVE Engaged Citizenry volunteer programmes. Spend an hour a week during the term working with your local organisation to implement structured activities.

Siyakhana

Siyakhana is a volunteer-based community engagement programme that creates meaningful leadership and learning opportunities for students living in the Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 residential system. Developed through a partnership between the Division of Student Support and Development (DSSD) and Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 Community Engagement (RUCE), the programme supports an early childhood development (ECD) numeracy intervention in economically disadvantaged ECD centres in Makhanda.

Responding to a community-identified need for numeracy support for 4–5-year-olds, Siyakhana brings together student volunteers from all 14 residence halls. Each Hall Team, led by an elected Community Engagement Hall Representative, commits to facilitating 11 numeracy sessions per year.

The numeracy sessions are designed and supported by Foundation Phase mathematics specialists, who also train participating students. A strong Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning framework tracks student development, attendance, and the programme's impact on learners and ECD practitioners. Siyakhana offers a mutually beneficial model that strengthens early learning outcomes while building student leadership and social responsibility.

Vulindlela

Vulindlela provides academic support to the children of our Rhodes support staff who are learners in local schools! Vulindlela is a dynamic programme with various opportunities for student engagement.

Through your volunteering, we ensure that the Vulindlela Programme runs smoothly, ethically, and professionally.  

Contributing to the Makhanda education pathway to ensure quality education for all. The Vulindlela Programme provides intensive, one-on-one mentoring to ensure more equal access to tertiary education.

Nine Tenth's Mentoring

Nine Tenths is a mentoring programme to help matric mentees negotiate goal setting, learning study skills and summarising, career guidance and applying to tertiary institutions. After being trained in an accredited short course, you meet weekly with your mentee to guide them through the programme.  

Through your volunteering, we ensure that the Nine Tenth's Programme runs smoothly, ethically, and professionally.  

Contributing to the Makhanda education pathway to ensure quality education for all. The Nine Tenths  Programme provides intensive, one-on-one mentoring to ensure more equal access to tertiary education.

Makhanda Literacy Pathways (MLP)

The MLP brings together educators, literacy partners, community organisations, and student volunteers to support early literacy development from Grade R to Grade 3.

Our mission is simple: To help every child in Makhanda move from learning to read to reading to learn.

From 2026, all RUCE literacy volunteering will take place through the MLP across four developmentally aligned Literacy Labs:

  •  Literacy Lab R Emergent Literacy Foundations (Grade R)

  •  Literacy Lab 1 Listening & Speaking (Grade 1 – WordWorks Stellar)

  •  Literacy Lab 2 Vocabulary, Fluency & Comprehension: Level 1 (Grade 2)

  •  Literacy Lab 3 Vocabulary, Fluency & Comprehension: Level 2 (Grade 3)

All volunteers will first complete the Pathways to Literacy – Foundations for Change short course, followed by Lab-specific training.

High School Tutoring & Mentoring

High School Tutoring & Mentoring is a programme for local (Makhanda) Grade 8, 9 and 10 learners from selected schools who are tutored and mentored by Rhodes 欧洲杯足球网_外围买球app推荐-投注|官网 students. Student Volunteers play a key role in strengthening educational development across Makhanda. You are the bridge between RUCE, partner schools, educators, and student volunteers. Through your volunteerism, we ensure that the High School Tutoring & Mentoring Programme runs smoothly, ethically, and professionally.
